The warranty protects commercial and institutional purchasers of Cyber Reliant data protection products with coverage of up to $5 million USD.

미국 정보 보안 기술 선도 기업 사이버릴라이언트(Cyber Reliant)가 한국 진출을 선언했다. 2010년 설립돼 이제 10년 차에 접어든 회사지만, 회사가 쌓은 경험치는 만만치 않다. 최고의 정보 보안이 요구되는 미국 정부기관을 위해 기술을 개발하기 시작해 현재는 수많은 글로벌 기업까지 서비스가 확대되고 있다. 데이터 암호화·분할·분산·저장 등 프로세스를 통해 인가된 사용자 외에는 데이터를 사용하거나 복구할 수 없는 기술력을 보유하고 있다. 사이버릴라이언트를 이끄는 릭 부에노 대표는 "데이터 암호화 솔루션으로 사이버릴라이언트의 보안 프로그램은 단 한 번도 해커에게 뚫린 적이 없다"며 "그렇지만 기술적으로 해킹이 불가능한 영역은 존재하지 않기 때문에 상대보다 보안은 항상 한 발짝 앞서 있어야 하는 것이고, 그것은 노력으로 가능하다"고 말한다.

부에노 가족은 한국과 인연도 특별하다. 그의 부친은 한국전쟁 참전용사이고, 부에노는 미국 정부에서 근무하던 시절 한국을 오가며 일했다. 사이버릴라이언트는 이번에 헌터파트너스를 통해 한국에 진출한다. 헌터파트너스는 사이버·에너지 분야 전문가들이 설립한 컨설팅 회사다.
 
―사이버릴라이언트는 어떤 회사인가.

▷사이버릴라이언트는 첨단 군사 기술 분야에서 데이터가 유출되지 않도록 보안 솔루션을 제공하는 회사다. 원래 미국 정부기관을 위해 기술을 개발했으며, 가장 진보된 형태의 사이버 공격으로부터 음성, 영상, 파일, 데이터베이스 등을 보호할 수 있다. 현재 미국 정부기관이 사용하는 노트북 컴퓨터, 패드, 스마트폰 등의 1급 비밀자료를 보호하는 용도로 사용되고 있다. 우리는 그동안 보안이라는 공식에서 빠져 있던 부분에 주목했다. 전 세계적으로 사이버 해킹이 끊임없이 발생하는 가운데 기업들은 어떻게 대응하고 실패하는지를 지켜봤다. 결론은 데이터 자체를 보호하는 것이 해결 방법이었다. 네트워크에 침입이 발생하고, 보안이 뚫리더라도 데이터는 최후의 보루로 지켜야 한다. 사이버릴라이언트 기술은 지금까지 미국을 비롯해 캐나다, 호주, 영국에 선보였다. 이번에 한국 진출을 앞두고 있는데 아시아 국가로는 최초다.

―아시아 국가 중에서 한국을 가장 먼저 선택한 이유는.

▷먼저 개인적으로 우리 가족은 한국과 인연이 깊다. 아버지는 한국전쟁 참전용사이고, 나는 미국 정부에서 일하면서 한국을 자주 방문해 좋은 추억을 많이 쌓았다. 우리가 보유한 양자 보안(Quantum Security) 기술을 한국에 선보이게 된 이유에는 이런 개인적인 부분도 있다. 하지만 무엇보다 한국이 미국의 오랜 동맹이자 우방이라는 점이 우선적으로 고려됐다. 한미는 북한, 중국, 러시아 등에서 시도되는 사이버 공격에서 스스로를 방어해야 하는 상황이다. 한국은 빠른 시간 내 경제 발전을 이루면서 국방·의료·금융 등에서 중요한 인프라스트럭처를 보유하고 있다. 타국으로부터 보호해야 할 지식재산을 다량 보유하고 있다는 의미다. 양자 보안 기술이란 양자컴퓨터를 사용한 공격을 방어할 수 있는 보안 기술을 의미하며, 사이버릴라이언트의 양자 보안 기술은 데이터에 직접 적용돼 네트워크 침입, 멀웨어, 전자도청에 의한 데이터 유출 등을 방지한다.

―최근 사이버 공격은 어디까지 진화하고 있나.

▷침투가 어려운 정부 또는 기업 네트워크를 공격하기 위해 인공지능(AI)을 이용하고 있다. 그렇다면 해커들이 AI를 이용해 홈네트워크를 공격하는 것이 얼마나 쉬울지 상상해봐라. 과거에는 공격자들이 해킹에 어떤 기술을 사용하는지 알아내는 것이 매우 쉬웠지만, 이제는 그렇지 않다. 해커들은 해킹에 성공한 기술을 서로 공유하며 끊임없이 발전시킨다. 이제는 국가 정보망과 개인 정보망을 공격하는 데 쓰이는 기술이 크게 다르지 않다. 즉 공격 대상에 상관없이 같은 수준의 기술을 사용하는 상황에 이르렀다.
 
―향후 사이버 해킹은 어떤 양상으로 전개될 것으로 보나.

▷미국에서는 사이버 공격이 향후 어떤 모습이 될 것인가에 대한 많은 연구가 진행됐다. 앞으로는 국가나 개인에 대한 공격에 공히 양자컴퓨터가 사용될 것으로 보고 있다. 지금처럼 네트워크 보안에만 치중한다면 양자컴퓨터 공격에 당할 수밖에 없다. 네트워크 보안뿐만 아니라 데이터 자체를 보호하는 데 집중한다면 이러한 공격을 성공적으로 방어할 수 있다.

―세계 주요 국가의 사이버 보안 산업 현황은.

▷사이버 보안 산업은 여전히 네트워크 보안을 통한 데이터 보호에 치중하는데 결과는 성공적이지 못했다. 사이버 보안 기업들이 경제적 이익에 집중하느라 정보 유출을 차단할 수 있는 근본적인 접근 방식을 취하지 못하고 있는 것으로 보인다. 최근 사이버릴라이언트가 고객들을 대상으로 한 조사 결과를 분석해보면, 현재 보안 방식은 지나치게 상품화된 턴키 방식의 SaaS(Software as a Service·여러 기능 중 사용자가 필요로 하는 서비스만 이용할 수 있도록 한 소프트웨어)에 주력하고 있는데, 고객들은 이를 기피하는 현상이 뚜렷했다. 이는 사용자 의사가 반영되지 않거나 제한적으로 반영되며, 취약점 전파(Vulnerability Propagation)가 발생할 수 있기 때문이다. 가령 턴키 SaaS의 경우 한 사용자에게서 취약점이나 데이터 유출이 발견되면 같은 제품을 구입한 모든 소비자들이 동일한 취약점에 노출되는 리스크와 위험을 감수해야 한다. 문제는 보안 업계가 사업 모델을 분석하면서 대규모 매출을 일으키는 SaaS를 선호한다는 것이다. 그 결과 보안 기술 발전보다 수익 사업 모델 개발에 집중하게 됐다.

―기존 보안 솔루션의 한계는 무엇인가.

▷대부분 네트워크나 시스템으로의 침투를 방어하는 `경계 보안(Perimeter Security)`에 기반하고 있다. 이 같은 접근 방식이 정보 유출을 막지 못한다는 것은 명확하게 드러났으며, 이러한 솔루션에만 의지한다면 지속적으로 정보 유출을 겪게 될 것이다. 기업 입장에서 최선의 방법은 대응적 보안(Reactive Security)과 선제적 보안(Proactive Security)을 모두 강화하는 것이다. 선제적 데이터 보호와 경계 보안을 결합하는 것이다. 단순히 적이 경계를 넘어 침투하는 것을 막는 것뿐만 아니라 이미 경계를 넘어 침투한 적이 데이터에 접근할 수 없게 해야 제대로 된 보안이라고 할 수 있다. 다시 말해 제대로 된 보안을 위해서는 이 두 모델이 모두 필요하다.

■ 데이터 빼내 "몸값달라" 협박 거세져…기업도 국가도 랜섬웨어 방어책 필수

―문제가 되는 랜섬웨어는 어떤 양상으로 전개 중인가.

▷랜섬웨어는 원래 사용자의 데이터를 암호화해서 사용자가 접근할 수 없게 만든다. 그런 다음 사용자가 데이터를 사용하려면 돈을 지불하게 만드는 식으로 작동했다. 최근 한국 대기업들이 이런 랜섬웨어 공격을 받아 기사화된 적이 있는 것으로 안다. 이제는 단순히 데이터를 암호화하는 것을 넘어 해커(공격자)가 암호화된 데이터를 다크웹(암시장)에 파는 지경에까지 이르렀다. 즉, 데이터를 뺏긴 쪽이 사이버 세상의 인질이 되는 것이다. 기존 경계보안 방식의 사이버 보안 체계는 랜섬웨어가 컴퓨터에 침투하는 것을 막기 위해 고안되었지만, 결과적으로 랜섬웨어에 취약했다. 여기에 랜섬웨어가 양자컴퓨터와 AI를 추가 장착한 무기로 발전한다면, 기존 경계보안 방식의 방어 모델은 더욱더 비효과적일 것이다.

―코로나19로 재택근무가 증가하고 있다. 보안은 어떻게 달라져야 하나.

▷회사가 모든 직원에게 컴퓨터를 사줄 수는 없지만, 보안 프로그램을 지원해줄 순 있다. 한 직원이 사이버릴라이언트의 보안 프로그램이 지원되는 컴퓨터를 집에서 사용하면 회사와 관련한 모든 정보를 보호할 수 있지만, 회사 외 다른 데이터에는 아무런 영향을 끼치지 않는다. 재택근무 중인 직원의 집에서부터 수집하게 되는 모든 국가 소유 정보를 보호하는 것이다. 이 방식은 현재 미국 정부기관 중 한 곳에서 도입을 검토 중이다.

―사이버릴라이언트 보안 프로그램이 사이버 공격에 뚫린 적은 없나.

▷아직까지 없다. 우리 프로그램은 미국 정부기관 소속 해커들이 테스트를 한다. 그 테스트를 통과해야만 최고 기밀 정보의 보안을 책임질 수 있는 프로그램으로서 자격을 얻을 수 있기 때문이다. 회사 내에도 자체적으로 해커들이 일하고 있으며, 지속적으로 소프트웨어를 테스트해서 혹시라도 약점이 발견되면 곧바로 보완한다. 이렇듯 정부기관 소속의 해커들과, 회사 소속의 해커들로 인해 지금까지 제품의 보안 능력을 유지할 수 있었다.

―현재 미국 사이버 보험 시장의 규모와 전망은 어떤가.

▷데이터 유출이 발생했을 때 기업에 벌금이 부과될 수 있다는 인식이 확산되면서 사이버 보험 시장이 성장하고 있다. 최근엔 보험회사가 기업에 "데이터 유출 사고 방지를 위해 귀사는 어떤 보호장치를 보유하고 있나요?"라고 되묻는 상황이다. 사이버릴라이언트는 현재 세계에서 가장 역사가 깊은 보험회사 중 한 곳과 함께 일하고 있다. 이 보험사는 사이버릴라이언트 제품에 대해 전 세계 어디에나 적용되는 보증 및 보험을 제공하고 있다. 한국도 사이버 보험 도입을 국가 차원에서 고민해야 할 것이다. 사이버 보험의 의무화는 기업에 사이버 보안 강화를 요구하게 되고, 결과적으로 경제 활성화에도 도움을 가져다주게 될 것이다. 국가적으로도 이익이다.

―국가 간 사이버 공격이 계속 발생하고 있다. 사이버 공격에서 `해킹 불가` 영역이 존재하나.

▷절대 그렇지 않다. 아직까지 뚫려본 적이 없는 소프트웨어는 있을 수 있지만, 해킹 불가능한 소프트웨어는 있을 수 없다. 그 어떤 국가도 해킹당하지 않은 적은 없다. `해킹 불가능`이란 당초에 없다. 중요한 점은 해킹을 당하면서 무엇을 배웠느냐는 것이다. 사이버릴라이언트의 역할은 최신 해킹에 대한 정보를 확보하고, 이를 통해 자사 소프트웨어를 강화해 이를 정부에 제공하는 것이다. 이를 통해 정부는 예상 가능한 공격으로부터 스스로를 보호할 수 있게 된다. 하지만 `내 소프트웨어는 해킹이 불가해`라고 자신하는 순간이 해킹의 위협에 노출되는 시점이다. 즉 노력과 인식의 문제다. 기술적으로 해킹이 불가한 영역은 존재하지 않기 때문에 상대보다 항상 한 발짝 앞서 있어야 하는 것이고, 그것은 노력으로 가능한 것이다.
 
―늘 해킹으로부터 배운다는 얘기인가.

▷그렇다. 그리고 미국 정부는 한국과 정보를 공유한다. 한국과 정보를 공유한다는 것은 해킹을 포함한 범죄 관련 정보 및 우려 사항을 한국과 공유한다는 의미다. 호주, 대만과도 공유한다. 민주주의를 유지하고 지키려는 국가를 위해 정보를 공유해야 한다. 사이버릴라이언트는 미국 내 많은 파트너들로부터 수많은 정보를 제공받아서 소프트웨어를 개발해왔고, 지난 10년간 그렇게 쌓아온 노력과, 이해와 지식을 가지고 한국 시장에 공유하고자 한다. 과거의 수많은 해킹을 통해 우리가 공유하고 배운 지식을 활용하면 한국이 좀 더 안전해질 수 있을 것이다.

―최근 팰런티어(Palantir) 기업이 상장으로 인해 많은 관심을 받았다.

▷사이버릴라이언트와 팰런티어의 공통점을 얘기하자면, 두 회사 모두 국방 및 정보 분야에서 출발했다는 점이다. 팰런티어는 정보 분석을 하고, 우리는 정보 보호를 한다. 팰런티어와 마찬가지로 우리도 가장 난도가 높고 요구사항이 까다로운 국방·안보 분야에서 데이터를 보호하면서 배운 경험을 기반으로 일반 비즈니스 영역으로 데이터 보호를 확대하고 있다. 사이버릴라이언트가 팰런티어의 규모로 성장할 것인지 대해 예단하기는 쉽지 않지만, 현재 사이버릴라이언트는 미국 및 유럽에서 빠른 성장을 하고 있다. 변하지 않는 것은 고객에 대한 헌신이다. 사이버릴라이언트는 이번에 한국 기업들을 위해 일할 수 있는 기회를 얻게 되어 매우 감사하게 생각한다.

―최근 유럽에서 프라이버시 실드(Privacy Shield)를 무효화함으로써 글로벌 기업 등에 직접적인 영향을 미칠 것으로 보인다. 막대한 벌금까지 부과될 수 있는데.

▷유럽사법재판소(ECJ)에서 유럽연합(EU)과 미국 사이에 데이터 보호, 보안, 그리고 개인정보 보호 관련 법규에 대해 검토·분석한 결과 이러한 법규들이 EU와 미국 사이에 주고받는 각종 개인정보를 보호하기에 불충분하다는 결론을 도출했다. 새로운 법률은 EU와 미국 간에 안전하게 정보를 전송하는 것에 대한 정책(프라이버시 실드) 자체를 무효화하기에 이르렀는데, 그 이유는 정보를 주고받는 과정에서 각국 정부가 개인정보를 무분별하게 수집하고 사생활을 침해할 우려가 있다는 판단에 따른 것이다. 프라이버시 실드는 EU와 미국 간에 상업 및 금융 정보 등을 보안전송하는 것에 대한 협약이었는데, 그것을 전면 무효화한 것이다. 결과적으로 페이스북, 구글 같은 회사들, 또는 금융기관, 의료기관 등이 양 대륙 간 개인정보를 전달하는 경우 모두 위법이 된다. 이런 가운데 사이버릴라이언트 정보 보호 기술이 미국·유럽 간 정보 전달에 있어 개인정보 보호 문제에 대한 해결책이 될 수 있을 것인가에 대해 검토가 진행되고 있다. 현시점에서 이 문제를 해결할 수 있는 유일한 기술로서 고려되고 있는 것이다.

―사이버릴라이언트 기술을 도입하는 것은 누가 검토하고 있는 것인가.

▷`포천 50`에 포함되는 미국 및 영국에 소재한 로펌에서 이러한 솔루션을 찾는 역할을 담당하고 있다. 그들은 우리에게 직접 찾아와서 "많은 회사들을 만나서 얘기해봤는데, 사이버릴라이언트가 이 문제를 해결할 수 있는 유일한 회사라는 결론을 내렸다"고 말한 바 있다.

―이 로펌이 ECJ로부터 의뢰를 받은 것인가.

▷해당 로펌은 미국 및 EU 내 수많은 클라이언트들로부터 의뢰를 받고 이 문제를 해결할 수 있는 방법을 찾고 있다. 이 문제를 해결하지 못해서 대륙 간 금융정보 등을 전송할 수 없게 될 경우 입게 되는 경제적인 피해가 최소 수십억 달러에서 수조 달러에 이를 정도로 막대하기 때문이다. 법률 위반 시 기업들이 내야 하는 벌금은 연 매출의 4% 규모다. 해당 로펌에 의뢰한 고객의 경우 많은 사람들이 매일 사용하는 소셜네트워크서비스(SNS)를 제공하는 포천 50대 기업이 포함되어 있다.

―현재 EU에서 미국으로 전송되는 데이터가 보호되지 않는가.

▷보호되고는 있지만, 현재 그러한 보호에 사용되고 있는 방법이 요구 기준에 부합하지 않는다는 것이다. 보안 기술이 적용되어 있지만 충분하지 않다는 말이다. 유럽에서 전송되는 모든 데이터는 휴지 중(at-rest), 사용 중(in-use), 전송 중(in-transit)에 공히 보호되어야 한다는 것이다. 현재 사이버릴라이언트 기술 외에 이 조건에 부합할 수 있는 유일한 방법은 데이터 공유 범위를 지역 단위로 제한하는 방법뿐이다.

예를 들어 많은 사람들이 사용하고 있는 SNS 회사에서 EU로부터 데이터를 전송받아 다른 곳에서 이 데이터를 분석하는 것이 앞으로는 더 이상 불가하므로, EU에서 발생한 데이터는 EU 내에서만 사용해야 한다는 의미다. 다시 말해 수억 달러 규모의 운영자금을 들여 다루는 EU 내 소셜미디어의 정보를 미국에서는 더 이상 볼 수 없게 된다. 이렇게 되면 미국은 미국만의 플랫폼, 영국은 영국만을 위한 플랫폼을 갖춰야 한다. ECJ는 전체 EU를 대변하지만 실제로는 각국의 국가안보에 대해서는 아무런 영향력도 책임도 없다. 국가안보에 대해 아무런 영향력이 없는 ECJ가 테러리스트에 대한 추적을 무력화하는 결정을 발표한 것이다. 만약에 소위 프라이버시 정보에 미국이나 영국을 공격하려는 계획을 가진 테러리스트에 대한 정보가 포함되어 있다면 어떻게 되는 걸까. 이러한 프라이버시 제약 때문에 영국은 더 이상 이러한 정보를 조사할 수 없게 되고, 이는 개인 사생활과 정보 보안 사이에서 심각한 불균형을 초래하게 된다.

―사이버릴라이언트에는 어떤 이들이 일하고 있나.

▷우리 임원진은 사이버 분야에 강한 백그라운드를 가진 전직 미국 정부 관련 분야 고위직 출신, 정보기관 출신 임원, 미국 외교협회, 미국 전략국제문제연구소 출신, 금융 관련 법규에 정통한 전직 은행 임원 등 다양한 인력이 모여 경험과 지식을 결합한다. 설계, 엔지니어링, 생산, 그리고 국방, 금융, 의료, 및 기타 시장에 대한 시장 진입 전략까지 역량이 발휘되고 있다.

Traditional secure voice and chat products rely heavily on a combination of limited-use specialized devices and complex to manage network and cloud security. These complexities are not cost effective, deliver a non-commercial user experience and increase data breach exposure risk.

With Cyber Reliant’s breakthrough secure voice and chat innovation, sensitive and confidential communication can be conducted on any commercially available Android and iOS device thus eliminating the need for a limited-use specialized device with full privacy and security on any network while removing the risk of electronic eavesdropping and exploitation.

Cyber Reliant has released its early access program to specific security and privacy focused government and commercial industry test users for quantum resistant voice and chat. Adopting quantum resistance methods is essential for ensuring full spectrum data security and privacy. Cyber Reliant’s quantum resistant secure voice and chat provides a level of security such that if an attacker had unlimited computing power, as in a weaponized quantum computer, they still could not compromise the data protection methods employed by Cyber Reliant.
